I think I have switched to WotLK preparation mode. I lack direction and focus, except when talking about where I want to be once the expansion is released. I am focusing on Alts, and my 70s are looking to gear up for leveling. I don't think I'm the only person thinking this way.
My guild also lacks direction. We raid every once and a while, but most people are doing their own thing. Many people have left, and I've been happy to see most go. I just want our guild to get trimmed down to a nice core group of players. If I get my way, then the players that remain will be the ones that actually have jobs and families. I want the players that understand that sometimes you can't play because your kid is sick or you got called into work. Basically, I want to play with other adults, or at least kids that understand that the game isn't everything.
Blizzard's choice to make all raid instances in 10 or 25 person flavors is a godsend for my friends and me. When we heard that, all thoughts of 25 raiding were tossed out the window. We will only be doing 10 mans in the expansion, and we are very excited about it. I'm even crossing my fingers that a couple old guild members will return to the fold once they have seen all the BC raid content.
The switch to two separate raid progression paths also has me thinking about the role of alts in a small guild. I think it is important for players to be flexible about the roles they can play. Right now, I can be a tank or a healer. Granted, most of the time I need to bring my tank, but every once and a while a healer is needed more. I just like the idea of having options, because a casual guild will still probably run the first couple 10 mans for a long time. Nothing like doing same old content with a new class to spice things up.
For WotLK, I am going to add a third 70 to my collection (well technically fourth, but I don't count the Alliance Mage anymore). Right now, I am focused on my level 30 Undead Warrior. I see this character being more about Arena PVP, and less about raiding. Then I can focus my Druid towards getting the best tanking gear available, and not worry about much PVP.
I think it is a good plan, but I'll still probably let the wind take me wherever it goes.

You're so right about the 10-man content, I thougth exactly the same.
While 40-man raids were quite fun in old times, I was so disgusted by the 25-man content in BC. Ok the encounters are well designed, but it is too much hardcore for most people. I mean, there should have been a 25-man T4 instance of the size and simplicity of Karazhan. Gruul's Lair is too short and too hard compared to Karazhan.
I think Blizzard understood that (a few weeks ago they admitted that BC was too hardcore), and -I hope- they are steering in the right way with WotLK.
Ive already switched to a WotLK preparedness kind of play myself and with my new guild as well building and preparing for Wrath.
Since I've already done a bit of Kara and having only one main 70 I'm pretty much just chilling out in my game play and not focusing much on BC. I still do Heroics for Badges to complete by gear sets but not farming badges as much as when I did 3-4 heroics for 15+ badges a day. I fill in now on then with my old guild as a tank if they need one in. Kara or for gruul. These days just kinda focus on growing my guild focusing to having a good 10 man team for WotLK and looking toward the 10 man content. I have a liking towards smaller more agile close not team play vs 25 man teams. Though 25 man raid are nice, I prefer a smaller strike team with flexability.
So that's kinda the play mode I'm in as a person that also have a full time job and career around my play time as well. So I guess your not alone in many those that are playing with Wrath in mind.
I ran out of steam WoW-wise, but WotLK previews just didn't grab me, so my interest shifted to Age of Conan. Now that game is out and I have to say, I'm happier than I'd ever been in Azeroth.
I hope WotLK works out for you though.
Validated. Your thoughts are exactly how me and my closest Wow (and IRL) friends are feeling. Many of our "hardcore" players have left because our full T4 & ZA/beginning T5 guild isn't progressing. The ones that have stayed are trickling out cause we spend our time full clearing Kara/Gruuls/Mags to gear up the flood of guild initiates. Sigh.
I think with the expansion, our semi-serious, 3 night/wk raiding guild will shift focus to 10-mans. It's a "pure" gaming experience running a mature, focused Kara raid over a night or two. If the expansion can give us that same experience in multiple raid environments, then we'll be in heaven.
Depending on numbers, our guild could easily have 2 teams progressing, with the goal of combining for 25-man content. Until then, I dutifully run my 70 to help gear up the kids, and try to sneak in time for my hunter alt. :)
