Moving Beyond Karazhan?

My guild attempts to run two Kara groups a week. I say "attempts" because we actually only have 15-16 reliable raiders. Occasionally we will bring in someone new, but for the most part, we have to use LFG to fill out our raids.

Our core group of raiders is also a mixed bunch. We have several players that no longer need any gear from Kara, but we also have newer players that still need lots of items. I've been trying to shift the newer players into my Sunday night group. Sadly, I still cannot get a consistent 10 players to show up for my raids. I am always missing a tank or a couple healers. We then have to look for pick up players, and I pray that the guild won't look like amateurs when someone pulls Maiden early (which happened twice last week).

I've been wondering if it is all worth it. One of the big problems I've seen is the ease at which people can PUG Kara. Several times now, I've had key players opt to PUG Kara because they may not make the Sunday run. Sometimes the same players end up logging in while the Sunday raid is underway (which is always infuriating). It is easier to put your personal needs ahead of the needs of the guild.

Maybe I should let them PUG it out? Maybe I should throw in the towel and let people do what they want. My guild is very casual, so it is always difficult to organize and bring people together. Maybe I should focus on my personal goals for once, and get the best of the guild together to run Zul'Aman on Sundays?

We have enough players ready to start working on ZA. Maybe if we start making progress, then other players will get their act together to join us in ZA. With ZA we can be more selective about people's gear and basically put a stop to the free rides. If people realize they need Kara gear to do ZA, then maybe there will be more interest in organized runs...

Of course, that would bring us back to Kara, not move us beyond... /sigh

I say we should make a weekend ZA raid. It feels like a decent amount of people could be on for a weekend raid. I know I would be up for it!

I saw a lot of the same behavior -- folks PuGing because they weren't sure they'd make scheduled runs -- in past guilds. This was particularly common, in my experience, among folks who didn't NEED to go (i.e., weren't going for gear). It became frustrating for officers, because groups weren't getting filled, and morale was on a decline because to many it seemed like now that folks had gotten what THEY needed, they didn't feel it was necessary or courteous to help those that hadn't yet.

Either way you look at it, it's going to be a slippery slope. To one extreme, you're going to end up with a group of folks just doing what they want and not showing support for guild events, which will frustrate those that are. To another extreme, you're going to end up frustrating people because you're trying to dictate what they can and can't do with their play time.

I never found a solution to the problem, myself, that was satisfactory to the majority of those involved. It's a difficult problem. One suggestion I would make, I guess, is to offer some form of incentive for folks to participate in guild runs rather than PuGing.

Good luck! I hope it turns out to the satisfaction of all involved.

We've had this same issue with my just former guild.

In the beginning when we started raiding as a guild 2 Kara teams was proposed. What happened was that neither teams could ever be filled on Raid Day as scheduled. So what happened is we went to one raid team for Kara.

A bit of the guild core members often did Bg's for gear and others didnt. On raid day some would show up and some didn't. Myself being the tank didnt do PvP mostly Heroics yet I needed various gear from Kara as well as the other MT. But among various other problems half the regular signed up people never show up from raid to raid or week to week.

Every week it was a different raid setup or raid members. Every week we had new people and new 70's in the raid makeup. It made for slow inconsistent progress. Of 77 people in the guild there were 2 main and dedicatedly geared tanks myself included that worked on our gear as much as we can. At Kara raids the only thing consistent in 2 months of Kara every week were the tanks everyone esle on the roster kept changing. Some people showed, some didn't, some people wanted to bring and alt to the raid and some times it happened. lots of late raid starts and inconsistencies.

This frustrated both tanks Me (Protec Paladin) and the Warrior tank. Eventually the guild wanted to progress to do ZA, yet on most week we only half clear Kara. On other days we barely have a 10 man raid group with no backups.

Eventually the frustration grew and Yesterday I decided finally to get rid of the problem once and for all.......I Quit! The guild loss a very dedicated Tank and a very dedicated geared player. The price of sometime morale decay and decline dealing with other way to casual attitude members being constantly late to raid, afk constantly and just not showing up is the Good and core geared members leave. I let the GM know I was quitting and why but i just had enough of it. But trying to progress in raiding has its own problems as well as with guildies that have varying degree of being progression minded.

Maybe the guild will eventually get better for the loss, who knows. Its tough to replace good dedicated players. But I rather move on with thing.
