I thought I would make a few suggestions for newer players trying to pick a name for their character. This in no way is a definitive list, so I invite my readers to add anything they think I may have missed.
1. First off, using the name of your class or race as part of your character's name labels yourself as a "Noob". How bad is your imagination that you cannot think of anything better than "Shortpaladin", "Taurentank", or "Stealthrogue"?
2. If you use a real word in your name, then please use a spellchecker before creating your character. I see at least one player with "Rouge" in their name on a weekly basis. I also remember a player named "Warcheif" that never got it, even when someone pointed out that his name was spelled incorrectly. The same goes for guilds. I saw a new lowbie guild named "Shadow Orchastra"
3. Following closing behind number 3, please do not intentionally misspell words because the correct spelling was already taken. Also don't use fancy characters in place of real letters to make something work. If I need to /who someone, then I don't feel like looking up how to type an "ä" or an "ê".
4. I don't have a problem with borrowing a name from another piece of media. A tribute to a somewhat obscure movie or book is a nice way to meet people that have similar interests. However, the World of Warcraft does not need anymore people with the name "Legolas", "Drizzt", or "Sephiroth" (not the mention all the horribly misspelled bastardizations). Stay away from characters from other popular media. I love The Lord of Rings as much as anyone, but that doesn't mean I would select "Gandalf" for my player name.
5. Finally, try to pick a name that you can live with well into the future. If you are starting out, then you have a long road ahead of you. For established players, you never know when an alt could become a main. Your name doesn't have to be 100% original. Your name doesn't have to be super serious or Role Player approved. Most character names are fine, so it should be easy to avoid a really stupid one.

Ha, my very first character (in beta, mind you) was named Elvenglory. I thought I was so clever, rofl. Severan teased me horribly about it at first (he'd played games before while I was a first-timer) but I still thought I was clever.
Oh...I was such a noob!
I actually like 'shadowrouge'. Maybe the pun is lost on you.
I do judge people by their names. When I see ultra stupid names I just ignore them totally, turn /sarcasm on or just nag on them. I can't help myself. My favorite name was warlock who obviously was using a powerleveling service.. named omgwarlock. I partied with him way later and he was 65 and could not handle his class.. OMG ^^
Oh... avoid names like Darkblahblahblah. I can't tell you how many ppl I know in my last guild alone that had names like Darkfire, Darkmist, Darkstar, Darkyourmom, etc etc.
It doesn't make you sound cool, or bad ass, or mysterious, or whatever. It just proves you're not creative, original, or even willing to put in the extra 30 seconds it would've taken to come up with something better.
That aside, have you any idea how irritating it is to have like 30 Darks in the same guild? Trying to get one or the other's attention is a pain in the ass, because none of them want to be called by the second part of their name, and none of them know who you're talking to if you just say "Hey Dark", and honestly, if I have to type out more that four letters of your name to get your attention, it's not worth it to me. I'm lazy too, ya know? :P
All my names come either from my brain, some RL witty reference IE. Wigwam the Tauren Druid, or they're some lesser known character from an RPG.
I actually created the name Keystone based off a book reference, but everyone I meet thinks I'm named after the alcoholic beverage.
I've drank Keystone Light in my younger years, but that's not the point. I grew tired of explaining my name, so now when people ask I just say I'm named after the beer.
May I also suggest giving the name generator a try. I know it spits out some incoherent names at times, but I found one of my most used & loved names from the SWG name generator... "Ocid", the Trandoshan Tera Kasi Artist / Smuggler.
Ocid is now a level 53 Night Elf Druid, and I think the name fits a Night Elf perfectly.
Uhm... yes some names you find online as "bleargh" :O~~~~
Usually i try to make a name which doesn't mean anything (or i hope so since i don't know if it means something in old aramaic :) and avoid to put the class or the race in it. Name should "sounds" well and remember the language of your race in my opinion.
Anyway people can call themselves as they want ^^... the only important thing is to try to not use strange characters as you said. I mean i can call my toon "Ôö" (this toon really exist on my server) but probably i'll have some problems to be called or whispered if people won't put me in their friend list. Actually i have no idea at all how to write it with my keyboard :/
Very much agreed.
I made the mistake of using a special character in one of my toon's names and lost a few items in the mail because they went to someone with the same spelling but no special characters. Fortunately I was forced to change the name, which allowed me to choose a name with no special characters.
To me, the only thing that's problematic are situations like Keystone (above) where you come up with a good or funny name, and either you then find out that there is something else well-known by the same name, or everyone seems to miss the joke or pun (no one wants to have to explain a joke or pun).
I will have to say that I was the typical newb with a ridiculous name for my first character. Fortunately I was forced to change it, and picked something a litte more appropriate. And yes, please check the spelling of your name, cause blizz isnt going to allow you to change it cause you messed up.
I have found that as i grew less newbish I started using the name generator and got a really great name that i use on a couple of servers: Groda It was perfect cause it was short and easy to say and remember. So when in doubt just keep hitting the suggest name button on the character creation screen, until something strikes your fancy.
well most of my toons names are names i've used previously in D&D, the only one i have that isn't is my newest mage "Shinypurplz", now i just got to get him up 70 70 and into some of those purples. :)
Groda means frog in Swedish. Also rhymes with Yoda! :D
All of my characters names come from morrowind npcs.
I find that you can still get a good name by taking your race and "izzle-izing" it. For example I have a draenei named Drizoozle. Other incarnations could include Geenizome, Nizzelf, Tizzauren, etc.
